Meet Curtis Wittenberg. Curtis is the Athletic Director at Finlandia University and has been participating or volunteering in Canal Run for at least the past 10 years. Wittenberg has served in a wide variety of roles for the Finlandia University athletic department since joining the department in 2003, and is settling into his new role there nicely.
Curtis has a unique volunteer job at Canal Run. He is the lead bike for the Half Marathon, so he basically leads the way, or clears a path, for the fastest runner of that race. With so many races happening at the same time, and runners and walkers sharing the road, it can be a challenge to “make way” for the half marathoners.
“Great events like Canal Run cannot happen without volunteers,” he says. “That’s why I do it. If I can’t run, I might as well volunteer and give back to an event I love.”
