Mike Adams, 67, of Houghton, chuckles as he tells me why he decided to participate in the 2017 Canal Run. “Call it shame or inspiration, my family pushed for me to do this,” Adams said. At 67 years old, Adams, a lifelong advocate of exercise and staying healthy is excited about the upcoming race. “My daughter and son in law, as well as their kids, all do the race, so they pushed me pretty hard to sign up,” he added. “It will certainly be a family affair.” Adams will be doing the 5-mile walk.
Adams walks four to five times a week now and feels he is ready for the event. “I love walking, and in the summer, I love walking outside,” he said. Last year he walked the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Bridge Walk and he plans to do the event again this year. “To me, it’s all about the fun,” he said. “I don’t set a time to beat, I just walk and enjoy the company and scenery.”
Mike, who is retired, encourages folks of all ages to come out and try this great event. “I’ve talked some friends at the Portage Fitness Center into joining in this year, so I won’t be the only rookie,” he said.
It’s not too late to join Mike and his family in the 2017 Canal Run. Sign up is available until the night before the race, which will be held, July 15.
