The 2017 Canal Run committee has chosen Abigail Tembreull as their featured artist. Tembreull, a print artist and student at Finlandia University’s International School of Art and Design, is creating an original sketch depicting the Canal Run race course. The artwork will be colorful and detailed and will capture many of the scenic views Canal runners and walkers enjoy. Each print will be signed by the artist, making it a truly amazing, original prize.
Every year the Canal Run committee aims to offer a piece of local artwork to the overall male and female winners of the 5-mile walk and run, 10-mile walk and run, half marathon and wheelchair division. Since many of the same winners, win from year to year, this solves the problem of the winners getting the same prizes repeated. Every year, it’s a new artist, a new local prize.
About featured artist Abigail Tembreull
Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Abigail Tembreull moved north to the scenic Upper Peninsula of Michigan at age 3. She spent the majority of her childhood in L’Anse – a small village bordering Keweenaw Bay, nestled between Lake Superior and the wilderness. Her creative parents fostered her innate zeal for creating. Her mother is a basketry artist, and her father is an excellent craftsman. Her sister also influenced Abigail into a creative role, as she launched a photography business during Abigail’s youth. Naturally, Abigail’s creative drive flourished. With the help of her parents, Abigail made a significant decision with the goal of attending
With the help of her parents, Abigail made a significant decision with the goal of attending Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design in mind. She transferred to Hancock Central High School during her junior year to obtain the Hancock Award, and partake in dual enrollment to aid in tuition costs for the art school. Today, she is continuing her education at FinnU, and has been experimenting with many different facets of art (concepts, mediums, studio practices, etc.), and has been creating work on the effects of social media and portable devices, the plight of our world’s elephants, and emotional experiences. She is considering making work on the topic of feminism, and on faithful versus secular living. She aspires to create work at artist residencies, gain further design experience, collaborate with artists she admires (Jan Brett, Shepard Fairey,) create a GaileoArt clothing line, and travel to Africa to see the elephants. In June 2017 Abigail attended Academia
In June 2017 Abigail attended Academia Riaci in Florence, Italy to study illustration. In February 2016, it was revealed that she won second place in Academia Riaci’s International Art & Design competition for the amateur illustration category. She looks forward to how her art and career will develop from her trips abroad. For the remainder of the summer she will be creating a mural for the Copper Country Community Arts Center; working as a graphic designer; a media intern; and continue her personal projects and GaileoArt commissions in her free time. In the Fall, she will begin her senior year at Finlandi and map out her plan for what’s next.
