In an effort to give back even more this year, Canal Run organizers are excited to announce that they will be hosting a used and new shoe drive, collecting shoes of all kinds to give to those in need. Come on – you know you’ve got dozens of pairs of old running shoes just sitting around collecting dust! This is your opportunity to do some good with those old shoes!
Partnering with Zappos for Good and Soles4Souls, the Canal Run would like to invite you to bring your gently used, fairly clean shoes to the Quincy Green area next to the expo and finish line on Friday evening and at a trailer located near where buses are at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church on Saturday. Just look for the trailer marked with signs and throw them in!
Please use a rubber band to secure each shoe together with its partner. After the event, volunteers from the Keweenaw Running Group will pack up the shoes in boxes and send them via UPS to Soles4Soulswhere the shoes will then be given to those in need. Soles4Soulsis a non-profit organization whose micro-enterprise model provides entrepreneurs in developing nations a powerful and sustainable way to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Let’s keep the shoes out of landfills and make a difference in people’s lives!
This initiative is also part of a larger effort to reduce the carbon footprint of Canal Run participants. The Keweenaw Running Group is partnering with Canal Run organizers on many levels this year to help the race become more sustainable and this is just one of several ways you can help! Watch for upcoming articles with more ideas on how YOU can be a part of this fantastic movement to help our planet and help the Canal Run to be more eco-friendly.
