Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly employees and volunteers will again take the team approach to tackling Canal Run. They plan to come out in even larger numbers this year. Last year, the Little Brothers team consisted of 12 employees and volunteers. According to Carol Korpela, Program Director, the team is growing.
“We are up to 16 participants this year,” she said. “We are a small staff here, so it says something about our commitment to see our numbers climb.”
A combination of things has inspired the staff and volunteers to organize their team and participate together.
“Canal Run gives back to the community,” Korpela said. “Little Brothers has been a recipient of that gift, so it’s important for us to be there, participating.”
Each team member chose their own event and crossed the finish line separately last year.
“Some were able to stick around for awards and comradery and some were not,” Korpela said. This year, to bring the group together after the races, they have planned something new. “We plan to bring our Forever Friends, from the medical care facility, to join us at the finish line to celebrate. Afterward, our employees and volunteers will head over with our Forever Friends, to the Little Brothers offices for a picnic lunch.”
Forever Friends are the senior citizens that Little Brothers have committed to visiting for life.
“Canal Run is a great community event, and our team only enhances that sense of community. We are proud to be there,” Korpela said.
