Every year the Canal Run offers a discount for people who get together and register as a team. Often times those teams will do the race together, buy matching t-shirts or train together.
Today we’re highlighting Half Moon Beach, a team of walkers from nearby Chassell, Michigan who fit all three of the criteria listed above.
Last year was the team’s first foray into the Canal Run as the long-time walking group decided to push it just a little further than the group’s usual four miles each day.
“I have been walking with the group for 17 years, and two have walked even longer than that,” Judy Evert said. “I wake up every morning to Dirk on the radio, and in 2014 when they were doing the live broadcast of the Canal Run I told the group, ‘we should be doing the Canal Run today.'”
The walking group did just that in 2015 as the group of five — Lou Helman, Judy Evert, Sandi Engel, Phyllis Johnson and Marvyl Wilson — completed the five-mile walk together.
“When we finished the five-mile walk we all said we could have walked many more miles,” she said. “It was such a great event!”
The group debated, at least for a few fleeting moments, jumping to the 10-mile walk for 2016, but instead decided to stick with the five for the second year. It should be easy to spot the group, which is fully committed to sticking together from beginning to end, as they wear their iconic purple Half Moon Beach t-shirts.
Be sure to say hi as you see them along the course this year!
