The trend of employee wellness isn’t going to slow anytime soon, but often companies can struggle with what exactly it means to them. BHK Child Development, which serves children in Houghton, Baraga and Keweenaw Counties, has taken a big step on that front over the last year, and this weekend the crew will be out in full force at the Canal Run with nearly 30 people registered with Team BHK.
“We talked about this after last year’s race when many of us were out there on the course separately,” said Caroline Penny, who has been the point person for the team. “When registration opened, we got right on it.”
It’s pretty close to 10 percent of the workforce that’s participating this year, and each of them will be wearing a BHK pin. However, it’s not just the Canal Run itself that has the BHK employees buzzing about wellness. At the Rod Liimatainen Center in Houghton, the staff has begun a new weekly tradition of a Friday walk.
BHK Friday Walk
“It’s become a time for staff to get together and move,” said Penny. “As the time has drawn closer to the Canal Run, we’ve been hearing more buzz about it. It’s been great to see people come out and make better, less formal, connections with their coworkers.”
With BHK offices spread apart as far as Mohawk and L’Anse, and just about everywhere in between, it’s been a nice way to bring people together. Jesse DePue is one of the many BHKers to participate in the walk. “Every week a different group seems to show up from several different offices, which leads to conversations with people you rarely see or work with on a regular basis,” she said.
DePue’s Canal Run story is like many in the Keweenaw, it’s been a fun tradition for years and years. It started when she was in college and then turned to an annual gathering of some friends. Now she’s bringing her kids out to the event. “It’s an amazing event, especially in comparison to what it was when I first started participating,” said DePue. “It’s turned into one of our great community events.”
